What is the significance of fee remission for females in the UPSC Prelim exam?

without comments

Please see this post on the same issue on this blog before reading this. On the same forum a new elaborate comment on this matter by a forum member:

It is true that the government does many things on the gender front without following it whole-heartedly (such as the gender budgeting by Chidambaram). Still in my opinion, this has a lot more than what meets the eye.

1. It is a clear policy statement by the UPSC/government. It has no tangible benefits except the 50 Rupees for the womenfolk but it will have ramifications. They may extend it to all other UPSC exams (ideally they should) including the Civil Services Main examination. Maybe someday the reservation for women in the parliament will also become a reality.

Is UPSC biased against science optionals in the Civil Services Examination?!

with 6 comments

There is a debate among students on this in a forum in the third week of November 2009. These are the excerpts. You can go to the forum link if the page has not expired. Please note that the following points are the views of the experienced students writing on that forum. This post also has a lot of comments on the Science subjects as optionals in the UPSC Civil Services Examination.

UPSC is completely biased against science optionals esp maths, physics,engg…..last year maths paper 2 was extremely difficult even though heavy scaling was done…..as many as 22 candidates got “zero” in paper 2…… average marks was 143/600….howz that possible….if scaling is for providing level playing field among all subjects then why is that average marks of optionals like pub ad and history were more than 280 while maths and physics optional average was less than 150….i’ll advise newcomers not to take any science optional……

Is the Main exam result coming in early February 2010?

without comments

Some students and aspirants are saying that the result of the UPSC Civil Services Main Examination 2009 will come in the first week of February, 2010. A few said that this news was given by the UPSC enquiry counter (facilitation counter).

Well, the news is not confirmed but be prepared for the Main exam result before the usual mid-March or late March announcement. It will only help shortening the exam period and process if the results come early. Please prepare for the upcoming interviews.

All the best to all UPSC aspirants.

Debate on the fee exemption to females in the UPSC Prelims

with one comment

UPSC aspirants and students (including females) are debating the utility and futility of the fee remission that has been made available to the women applicants now along with the SCs, STs and the PH candidates. These are excerpts (as on 12 pm, 5 Jan, 09) of the debate on a forum (link may have expired).

Not all agree that this move by UPSC vis-a-vis the Civil Services examination will lead to some kind of empowerment etc. and that it is a mere tokenism. Please note that all views in block quotes below are by students/participants in the said forum.

UPSC will not charge any examination fee from females

with 2 comments

In the recently notified UPSC Civil Services Examination (also called the IAS Exam/examination by many), the Union Public Service Commission has decided to give fee exemption to females along with the SCs, STs and the PH category. This is a welcome step and probably will be admitted in the UPSC examination system and be applied to all the exams conducted by the commission.

Please note that this fee is the remission on the 50 Rupees fee to be paid after buying the application form. Women and everyone else (including the SC, ST, PH category candidates) have to buy the UPSC forms in 20 Rupees and there is no fee rebate on that.
